Harmanpreet Kaur captained India for the 150th time in T20 internationals on 5 September 2026, during the Women’s Asia Cup match against Pakistan in Dubai. No other cricketer, male or female, has reached this mark. The second-highest is Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu with 121.

The record is not merely a function of longevity. It is evidence of sustained performance in a format that removes captains faster than any other.

Why 150 is harder than it looks

T20 is the least forgiving format for captains. Results are visible immediately, losing streaks are short and decisive, and boards are quicker to change leadership than in longer formats where rebuilding takes time.

Reaching 150 requires three things: being appointed young, performing well enough to survive every dip, and playing in an era where the women’s calendar is dense enough to generate the matches. Harmanpreet satisfied all three.

She made her T20I debut in June 2009 against England at Taunton, at 20 years old. Longevity in the job does not resolve every question about captaincy. India have not won a global T20 title under Harmanpreet — the 2020 T20 World Cup final loss to Australia remains the closest they have come.

That absence is worth noting, but it is not a simple verdict. Global titles are rare, and several of the greatest Test captains retired without World Cup wins. What can be said is that 150 matches is a body of work large enough to evaluate properly, and a 60% win rate across it places her among the more successful captains in the format’s history.

The 200 milestone already passed

Harmanpreet also became the first cricketer to play 200 T20 internationals, reaching that mark in June 2026 during the T20 World Cup. The playing record and the captaincy record are now both hers, which is a combination no other player in the format can claim.

What comes next

The Women’s Asia Cup semi-final against Bangladesh is on 10 September. The Asian Games in Japan follow from 17 September. Both are T20 competitions, both add to the count, and both are tournaments Harmanpreet will captain unless something changes.
